Charlie Athey

The closest Charlie Athey '01 came to the practice of law as an undergraduate was his role in the staged reading of Chicago. He played the part of Billy Flynn, Roxie's attorney.

"I took some political science and philosophy classes," he admits, "but it was my experience as a drama major-the literary and character analyses, the confidence that comes from stage performance, and the challenge of pulling a huge show together that prepared me for the study of law."

Charlie, who spent the last two years working as a law clerk in the State's Attorney's Office of Baltimore County, graduated from the University of Baltimore School of Law in May 2006. He recently accepted a position with Shapiro, Lifschitz and Schram, PC, in Washington, DC.

"The liberal arts requirements provide you with plenty personal freedom to challenge yourself in different ways and to explore your own interests," he says.

For Charlie, those interests still include the arts. He moved to the nation's capital in part because of the tremendous legal opportunities there, but also because of the city's great theatres.
